Emma Watson delivers speech for UN gender equality campaign

Emma Watson spoke at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City yesterday about gender equality in conjunction with the launch of the UN’s “HeforShe” campaign. Check out her speech here!

When I see Emma Watson up there speaking about gender equality and feminism and women at the UN, it makes me absolutely cry with pride. She is brave. She is beautiful. She is 24 years old and she has done so much and she has never let fame consume her, control her, ruin her. She grew up in…

We already liked Emma Watson. Now, we LOVE her.

I just think Hermione would be really damn proud of Emma right now.

I started questioning gender-based assumptions a long time ago. When I was 8, I was confused at being called ‘bossy’ because I wanted to direct the plays that we would put on for our parents. But the boys were not. When at 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. When at 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of their beloved sports teams because they didn’t want to appear muscly. When at 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings. I decided I was a feminist, and this seemed uncomplicated to me.
